چکیده

In this study, we evaluated the influence of idiopathic scoliosis on postural balance and muscle activity in static and dynamic sitting condition. Twelve adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis were included in this study. Postural balance and muscle activities of all subjects were assessed under two experimental conditions: i) static sitting, ii) dynamic sitting. In static sitting condition, subjects were instructed to sit the board for 30 seconds. In dynamic sitting condition, subjects performed pelvic anterior, posterior, left, right tilting induced by the structure of the board for 5 seconds, respectively. Inclination angle was measured by accelerometer which was attached to the center of the unstable board. Body pressure distribution pattern (contact area, maximum force, peak pressure, and mean pressure) was analyzed using capacitive seat sensor system. Also, surface electrodes were attached to the thoracic erector spinae, lumbar erector spinae, lumbar multifidus, and external oblique for assessing muscle activity. In comparison with mean inclination angle and pressure distribution between left and right side, postural balance was tilted to the posterior and left side. In addition, erector spinae muscles, especially thoracic erector spinae muscle, of subjects with AIS more increased on right side than left side in dynamic sitting condition. From these results, we confirmed that idiopathic scoliosis cause postural asymmetry, unequal balance, and muscular imbalance in static and dynamic sitting. Furthermore, postural balance measurement system in this study can be utilized to detect asymmetric sitting posture and abnormal muscle activity caused by idiopathic scoliosis. Evaluation for Postural Balance Pattern of Patients with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis using Pressure Sensor Systems

Abnormal lateral curvature of the spine may affect postural balance pattern in static and dynamic condition. Previous studies demonstrated asymmetrical balance patterns of adolescent patients with idiopathic scoliosis during sitting and walking. However, pressure distribution data have been rarely used to analyze asymmetrical postural pattern of scoliotic patients. In this study, pressure data ...

Comparison of Respiratory Muscle Electromyography between Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects

Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of this study was to identify the intensity of respiratory muscles activity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis compare with healthy indi...

Effects of the Direction of the Curve in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis on Postural Balance during Sitting

Improper postural alignment and trunk stability caused by idiopathic scoliosis may affect postural balance pattern during sitting. In this study, we conducted pressure data analysis for evaluation of postural balance in patients with idiopathic scoliosis by using pressure sensor system. Subjects were divided into three groups: a control group, scoliosis with left convex side of the curve group,...

Evaluation of Patient Outcome and Satisfaction after Surgical Treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Using Scoliosis Research Society-30

Background:  Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) may lead to physical and mental problems. It also can adversely affect patient satisfaction and the quality of life. In this study, we assessed the outcomes and satisfaction rate after surgical treatment of AIS using scoliosis research society-30 questionnaire (SRS-30).   Methods:  We enrolled 135 patients with AIS undergoing corrective surgery...
